Rowpin: count rows from your Lock Screen
This counter needs your screen unlocked. Rowpin, my iPhone and iPad app, counts from the Lock Screen and a Home Screen widget, finds the rows in your own knitting pattern and highlights the one you're on. It's on the App Store now. Rowpin needs Rowpin Plus: a 7-day free trial, then $29.99 a year or $4.99 a month in the US.
How to use the knitting row counter
- Tap the big number at the end of each row
Finished a row? Tap the row count or + before you turn your work. Ripped back a row? Use −.
- Keep a stitch count alongside
Counting a long cast-on or the stitches across a row? The stitch counter runs separately, so your row count stays put.
- Track a pattern repeat if you need one
Cable crossed every 8th row, or a lace chart of 12 rows? Tap 'Track a pattern repeat', enter the number of rows, and the counter shows which repeat and which row of it you are on.
- Put your phone down and knit
Tick 'Keep my screen on', and on a computer use the space bar. Your count saves after every tap.
How to count knitting rows by hand
Lost count, or picking up an old project? You can recount the rows on the fabric itself, then enter that number here and carry on. Crocheting instead? The crochet row counter has crochet's own counting tips.
- Stockinette stitch
On the knit side each stitch is a V. Count the Vs up one column, from just above the cast-on edge to the needle. Each V is one row. The loops on your needle are the row you just finished.
- Garter stitch
Count the ridges. Each ridge is two rows, so 15 ridges are 30 rows. Count on one side only.
- Ribbing
Count the Vs up one knit column, the same as stockinette.
- Rounds
Place a stitch marker at the start of the round. Then count the Vs up one column from the cast-on, one V for each round.
Common questions
What is a knitting row counter?
It keeps count of how many rows or rounds you have finished, so you don't have to count them on the work or keep tally marks on the pattern. This one also keeps a separate stitch count and can track a pattern repeat.
Is this row counter free?
Yes. It is free to use in any browser, with no sign-up, no download and no ads.
Does it save my count?
Yes. The count saves in your browser after every tap, so you can close the tab or lock your phone and pick up where you left off on the same device. Your counts are never sent anywhere and there is no account.
How do I count knitting rows on the work itself?
In stockinette, count the Vs up one column on the knit side; each V is one row. In garter stitch, count the ridges; each ridge is two rows. In the round, count the Vs up one column from the cast-on, one for each round. A counter saves you doing this every time you put the work down.
Does the cast-on count as a row?
Usually not. Most patterns start row 1 after the cast-on, so leave the counter at 0 until you finish your first row. If your pattern counts the cast-on as a row, its notes say so.
When should I tap the counter?
Tap it when you finish a row, before you turn the work. Tapping at the same moment every time is what keeps the count right.
How do I keep track of a pattern repeat?
Tap 'Track a pattern repeat' under the row count and enter how many rows the repeat has, for example 8 for a cable crossed every 8th row. The counter then shows which repeat you are on and which row of it.
Can I stop accidental taps changing my count?
Yes. Tap 'Lock counter' and taps and keys stop changing the count until you unlock it, so a phone in your project bag can't lose your place. The lock is saved with your count.
Will my phone screen stay on?
Tick 'Keep my screen on' and the page asks your browser to keep the screen awake while it is open, so you don't have to unlock your phone between rows. It works in most current browsers; if yours doesn't support it, the option won't show.
Is it the same counter as the crochet row counter?
Yes. Both pages use one counter, saved in this browser, so the count you see here is the one on the crochet row counter too.
